Game 4 at PAX Prime (Recap)

Revealing our new game, currently titled Game 4, during PAX Prime was a series of complicated and stressful adventures that turned out amazingly well. All of this happened weeks leading up to the show, and it was hard for us to keep our giddiness under control.

On top of working on the demo for Game 4, our co-founder & producer, John Baez, led the construction for 12 custom built arcade cabinets that would house our first ever playable demo for the public. (You can find more pictures of the construction in our PAX Prime Album Collection.)

The arcade cabinets were placed together on the show floor to create a magnificent dodecagon! Those who got a chance to play the game got to execute their orders using our nifty lever (which takes the place of the Y button on an Xbox One controller).

The demo lasted about 25-35 minutes on average depending on the player. Despite the long lines, PAX attendees were willing to wait up to 3 hours to play the demo and a lot of people even took the time to give us their feedback on the comment cards we provided! (Thank you to everyone who did!) For those of you who did not get to play, here’s the opening cinematic that players got to see during the demo:

cupcake-01As you may have heard or read in various PAX coverage last week, Game 4 (a working title) will be a fast paced, turn-based co-op adventure where you’ll have a chance to quest & explore, find awesome loot, customize your fighters, and recruit strange species!

And we have even more info for those who are thirsting for more about the game:

-Coming to Xbox One and Steam
-No release date (yet!)
-Deep strategy with simple controls
-The game moves as fast or slow as your own pace
-You can position all of your fighters before you end your turn
-Will Stamper (BattleBlock Theater) returns to the Behemoth universe as the unreliable Game 4 narrator
-Plans for the game: single player, 2 player co-op, and up to 4 players for 2v2

Don’t want to take our word for it? Well, maybe our narrator can change your mind! Here’s the video that played at the end of our PAX demo, which sums up everything we just wrote:

A Quick Word on our Latest Steam Feature

Hi guys, Aaron here!

Every once in a blue moon, I find that my desire to share a playlist with neat ideas wins out over my concerns about accessibility. It would appear that this week’s Solo Feature on Steam was one of those times. Acknowledging that, let me put two things out there before I continue:

1. The tail end of this playlist is HARD. Like, really hard. This is definitely something that should have been communicated in my forum post and on the blog; sorry about that! In the future, we are going to make sure the difficulty rating is posted front and center.

Also! Don’t forget that completing the Coop Feature will also unlock the same prisoner. As an added bonus, if you already happened to complete the current Coop Feature, new prisoners will unlock earlier in the playlist! We also make a habit of revisiting prisoners regularly, so even if you didn’t get a chance to unlock someone this time around, it doesn’t mean the chance is gone forever.

2. There is NEVER a reason to attack a level designer for the contents of their playlist. Remember that it is The Behemoth that chooses to feature a playlist, so please keep your feedback kind and constructive.

Everyone should have the freedom to make whatever they like without having to worry about how it will play to a wider audience. Heck, we’re the ones saying, “hey, this might be something you like”, so if you disagree with that statement, this is one of those rare times where you actually SHOULD shoot the messenger. I mean, well, metaphorically speaking.

Now with THAT out of the way, I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a bit of insight into the different factors I personally considered when selecting this particular Steam Feature and why we ultimately feel that this week’s playlist made the cut. For a general guideline for playlist creation, check out Furbottom’s Tips.

Furbottom’s Solos + Cat Control

FeaturePost_CatControlThere are days when you feel like you can’t control anything (like our Purrham unlock for XBLA & the Arena Feature last week. Those are up now by the way!). Other days, you feel like giving up control to a cat. That happens to you sometimes, right? No? Well it will now!

Finish up either the Solo or Co-Op playlist in Furbottoms Features and you’ll unlock Cat Control upon completion. It’s awesome seeing this feline control your body in BattleBlock Theater.

Here are the two new solo playlists that we’ve selected for Furbottoms Features this week:

XBLA Solo Playlist:
Solo Star by WeaklierCard6

Steam Solo Playlist:
Heaven to Hell by SnakeBD

Enjoy! Meow!
