Castle Crashers Pricing

Earlier today a story broke about the Japanese Xbox site reporting that Castle Crashers was slated for release at 1800 Microsoft Points. Pricing for this game has not been determined yet. Both The Behemoth and Microsoft are still working together to figure out a reasonable price point. (not 1800 points)

One thing that we would like to point out is that much like a retail store Microsoft is the distributor for all Arcade titles, and therefore sets the final price. The developer can consult on this, but ultimately, pricing is at the discretion of the distributor (Microsoft).

  1. ya, it is considering everyone thinks “. Says” is your name instead of “.”, which it is 😛

  2. Really, I’ll be buying it whatever. 1200 points is fine for me. I just think it’s funny so many people were throwing a fit over it that you had to post about it.

  3. I think that about 90% of us on the devblog will buy it no matter what… but we the “90%” make up like 0,001% of the whole potential marketplace. I think this will be a tough decision on every party involved in the pricing. Does anyone have any statistics on how much Penny Arcade have sold their game?

  4. I certainly expect that Castle Crashers will cost more than the standard 800 points, simply because of the large scale compared to other XBLA titles. The Behemoth should really only go as low as 1200 points – after all that’s how much Puzzle Quest cost, and that was a fantastic price for what was on offer.

  5. I kind of wish I knew Puzzle Quest was for XBLA also, or I wouldn’t have bought the DS version >.<

The Penny Arcade game is currently the best selling game for the first 3 days of sales, grossing $330,000 in that time. So Castle Crashers could make the jump, but The Behemoth is nowhere near as popular as Penny Arcade (even if I don’t like PA, I can’t deny it’s popularity).
    Proof at http://kotaku.com/5011161/penny-arcade-game-busts-three+day-records .

So just saying all those people who cry that expensive Arcade titles don’t sell, read that and reconsider.

  6. Thinking out loud… takeing into consideration the fact that Behemoth has only one artist, dan if im not mistakin, the fact that it took 2 years isn’t a surprise. When you think about microsoft how many online games have they let out that just sucked? I just contimplate the fact that this game needed that much polishing. Honestly, don’t get me wrong i really did buy a 360 for this game. Alot of games have come out and they just were not ready for online play. Anyone play rainbow 6? It just might of been me getting D/Ced after every match, but i didn’t have any other problems with my ps3. ::cheers:: to a release date! ::cheers:: to Behemoth. i can’t wait!

  7. why’d every not shud up about th damn pricing! now instead of a new character post we got a pricing denial…. wtf?

  8. All I’ve got to say is I’ve got 1300 points remaining from a 2100 points card. If it’s any more than that I’m going to curse your name all the way to the shops and back to get more points 🙁

I hope you an Micro$oft agree on a price you wanted.

  9. 1800 would be a good price, it’s like 20$, much less than most retail games. Maybe this will even increase the quality of the games on XBLA because many developers will be able to sell their bigger games at more resonable prices for them. Just like already happens on Steam.

  10. I find it odd that the distributor, Microsoft in this case, is the final decision on pricing. They didn’t work for 2 years on the game. They don’t have to worry about paying the programmers and artists. Why in the world do THEY get final say?

    Here’s hoping for 1200 points. 🙂

  11. Everyone, just shutup. We already voted on a price. They already told us they don’t know the price. Just stop. You’re annoying The Behemoth, and a lot of other people.

  12. Maybe I am totally wrong here because I do not know the nature of the relationship between The Behemoth and Microsoft but in general, in a Developper/publisher model, The publisher pays a pre-determined fee to the developpers to make the game + usually a % of the sales. Since the Dev already got paid, the publisher assume the “risks” and decide on pricing/advertisements, etc.

Now, we’ve learn that the XBLA model is different. Usually dev are only getting 30% of the sales (which used to be 70%) or maybe my % are a little wrong but everything is set in stone in advance. Now what I didn’t know is Microsoft having the final say on the pricing of a game. But The Behemoth have a target idea of how much money return they want from this game and microsoft probably have an idea of what the game is worth to them also. I just hope they can all come to an agreement that satisfied both The Behemoth, The publisher and of course, us, the gamers.
